Maharashtra: Natural Sugar’s biogas production initiative gains attention as war-linked LPG shortage disrupts supply

A sugar mill in Dharashiv is promoting biogas as an alternative to LPG amid fuel disruptions. The initiative by Natural Sugar uses organic waste to produce cooking fuel, offering a reliable, cost-effective solution while also generating organic fertiliser and supporting energy self-reliance.

Dharashiv: As global tensions and the ongoing West Asia conflict disrupt fuel supplies, a sugar mill in Maharashtra’s Dharashiv district is promoting biogas as a dependable alternative to LPG.

At Ranjani village in Kalamb taluka, Natural Sugar has been producing biogas from wet waste, leftover food and organic material. The initiative, led by founder B B Thombre, has been running for the past five years at the mill’s guest house, where it is used daily for cooking for 10 to 15 people, Agrowon reported.

With LPG supplies affected by the ongoing conflict in West Asia, several hotels and community kitchens in some areas have struggled to operate. In this backdrop, Thombre has urged hotels, hostels, public canteens and households to shift towards biogas as a stable and locally available fuel option.

He said ready-made biogas plants can be installed quickly and are capable of meeting 50 to 75 percent of cooking gas needs. These systems are available at affordable rates and are supported by government subsidies.

The initiative is being seen as a practical response to the current fuel crisis, while also supporting long-term self-reliance. Thombre noted that biogas technology is not new to India, with traditional gobar gas plants used in rural areas for decades.

Apart from providing fuel, the system also produces organic fertiliser, offering an added benefit to users.
