Uttar Pradesh : Cane shortage forces closure of 50 centres at Mawana sugar mill
Mawana Sugar Mill faces early shutdown risk as cane supply drops, forcing closure of 50 procurement centres. With intake far below capacity, only two units are running. Officials warn operations may end in April if supplies don’t improve, urging farmers to deliver remaining cane to sustain crushing.
Mawana: A sharp decline in sugarcane supply has forced the Mawana Sugar Mill to shut 50 of its 165 procurement centres, with fears rising that the mill could close operations in April, Amar Ujala reported.
The situation arises when the Tikola Sugar Mill has already ended its crushing season and ceased operations earlier this week.
Mill officials said the lower cane supply to the mill has affected operations, with only two of the three processing units currently running. Senior General Manager Pramod Balyan said the mill, which has the capacity to crush 130,000 quintals daily, is now receiving only about 80,000 quintals.
He added that the mill will continue to operate as long as sugarcane supply remains available and appealed to farmers to supply clean cane.
Officials indicated that the first notice for closure may be issued in the first week of April. As per rules, the mill will issue three notices before shutting down, allowing farmers time to deliver their remaining produce.
