Season 2025–26: Sugar output reaches 988.79 lakh quintals in Maharashtra; 187 sugar mills close operations

Maharashtra sugar season nears end with 187 of 210 mills shut. Production reached 988.79 lakh quintals from 1043 LMT cane, with 9.48% recovery. Kolhapur division Maharashtra led output and efficiency, while most regions saw early closures, signaling tighter supply despite higher crushing compared to last season.

Sugarcane crushing in Maharashtra for the 2025–26 season is in its final stage, with 187 out of 210 sugar mills having closed operations. As per the latest figures released by the Commissionerate, sugar production in the state reached 988.79 lakh quintals as of April 1, 2026.

A total of 210 mills have so far crushed 1043.17 lakh metric tonnes (LMT) of sugarcane, producing 988.79 lakh quintals of sugar. The average sugar recovery rate currently stands at 9.48%.

Of the 210 mills, 103 belong to the cooperative sector, while 107 are privately owned. The Kolhapur division continues to lead in both sugar output and recovery rate, and all the mills in the Kolhapur division have closed crushing operations.

Kolhapur: Out of 39 mills in the division, all have closed operations. The mills crushed 210.46 LMT of cane, achieving the state’s highest recovery rate of 11.02% and producing 231.91 lakh quintals of sugar.

Pune: In the Pune division, 25 out of 32 sugar mills have stopped operations. The mills crushed 224.99 LMT of cane at a recovery rate of 9.86%, resulting in 221.84 lakh quintals of sugar.

Solapur: Of the 49 mills in the division, 43 have stopped operations. These mills crushed 221 LMT of cane, recording a recovery rate of 8.6%.

During the same period in the previous season, 199 mills had begun operations, crushing 852.65 LMT of cane with an average recovery rate of 9.46%. A total of 195 sugar mills had closed operations during the same period last season.
