Russia’s sugar output crosses 6.3 million tonnes, exceeds domestic needs

Russia produced over 6.3 million tonnes of sugar in 2025, exceeding domestic needs and achieving 104.9% self-sufficiency. Higher sugar beet output and improved yields supported growth, ensuring market stability and strengthening food security well above national targets.

Moscow: Russia produced more than 6.3 million tonnes of sugar in 2025, a level sufficient to meet domestic demand and keep the market stable, the country’s agriculture ministry said, Oreanda News reported.

In a statement, the ministry said the country’s self-sufficiency in sugar stood at 104.9 per cent in 2025, well above the 90 per cent benchmark set under its food security guidelines.

The rise in sugar output was supported by higher sugar beet production. The harvest reached 48.9 million tonnes in 2025, marking an increase of 8.5 per cent compared to the previous year.

Average yields also improved during the year, rising by 5.7 per cent to around 414.1 hundredweight per hectare, the ministry added.
