Canada strengthens global wheat market position through export diversification

The report by Cereals Canada highlights how Canada is strengthening its global wheat export position through market diversification, technical support, and strong trade engagement across multiple international markets.

Canada continues to reinforce its position as a key player in the global wheat market through active market development and science-based export support, according to a report released by Cereals Canada on April 22.

The report shows that Canadian wheat is exported to more than 80 international markets annually, with total shipments expected to exceed 28 million tonnes in the MY 2025/26. The top destinations include China, Indonesia, Japan, the United States, and Peru.

Canada remains the world’s largest exporter of durum wheat and oats and is on track to become the third-largest global wheat exporter overall. This further strengthens its role in supporting global food security.

The industry’s export growth is driven not only by production volumes but also by strong market engagement. In 2025, Cereals Canada conducted trade missions, technical exchanges, webinars, and targeted buyer support programs across key global regions.

Particular focus was placed on Central America, Southeast Asia, and the Indo-Pacific, where demand for Canadian wheat classes such as Canada Western Red Spring and Canada Western Amber Durum continues to grow.

Cereals Canada emphasizes that market diversification is essential for long-term sector resilience. The combination of scientific expertise, technical customer support, and relationship-building with global buyers helps Canada maintain its competitiveness in the international grain trade.
