Khammam tops Telangana in maize procurement during Rabi season

Telangana has procured 11.54 lakh metric tonnes of maize during the Rabi season, led by Khammam with 2.54 lakh tonnes. The state targets procurement of 21.59 lakh tonnes from estimated production of 43.18 lakh tonnes. Storage, labour shortages, transport bottlenecks, and a 67.84 lakh gunny bag shortfall continue affecting operations.

Khammam district has emerged as the leading centre for maize procurement in Telangana during the ongoing Rabi season, with 2.54 lakh metric tonnes secured so far. Nagarkurnool follows with 1.55 lakh metric tonnes, while Warangal and Nirmal have recorded 1.11 lakh and 1.05 lakh metric tonnes respectively. According to official estimates, Telangana expects a total maize production of 43.18 lakh metric tonnes this season, with the government aiming to procure 21.59 lakh metric tonnes.

The state has established 336 procurement centres to meet these goals. As of May 20, a total of 11.54 lakh metric tonnes has been collected. Of this stock, 9.53 lakh metric tonnes have been transported to warehouses, while 2.01 lakh metric tonnes await shifting. To manage this volume, the government requires a storage capacity of 15.53 lakh metric tonnes. Currently, 12.75 lakh metric tonnes of space has been identified.

Chief Minister Revanth Reddy has directed District Collectors to secure additional facilities, and authorities have recently identified space for another 27,000 metric tonnes, with efforts continuing to locate further capacity. Operations also require 3.10 crore gunny bags. To date, 2.42 crore bags have been supplied, leaving a shortfall of 67.84 lakh. Furthermore, procurement is progressing slowly in several areas due to a shortage of loaders and transportation constraints.

Districts experiencing labour shortages include Adilabad, Bhadradri Kothagudem, Kamareddy, Khammam, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mahabubnagar, and Nirmal. Meanwhile, transportation bottlenecks persist in Bhadradri Kothagudem, Khammam, and Mahabubabad. Despite these hurdles, the government remains committed to ensuring efficient procurement to support farmers across the state.

This comprehensive effort reflects the administration’s focus on stabilising the agricultural supply chain and ensuring that every quintal of harvested produce is accounted for during this critical harvest window.
