Sugar prices hit record highs across Pakistan amid supply constraints

Sugar prices in Pakistan have surged to record highs of Rs.160-170 per kg due to supply shortages, tight wholesale availability and strong demand. Analysts warn prices may remain volatile, increasing financial pressure on households already struggling with rising living costs and weakening purchasing power.

Sugar prices have climbed to record levels across Pakistan, increasing the financial burden on consumers as supply shortages and strong market demand continue to push rates higher.

According to market reports, retail sugar prices have risen to between Rs. 160 and Rs. 170 per kilogram in several major cities. The latest increase comes after sugar was selling at around Rs. 136 to Rs. 139 per kilogram in some markets, while prices in other regions had already approached Rs. 150 per kilogram before the recent surge, Bloom Pakistan reported.

Traders attributed the sharp rise to limited availability of sugar in wholesale markets and sustained demand from buyers. They said tighter supplies have reduced stock availability, leading retailers to raise prices further.

Market analysts warned that sugar prices could remain volatile in the coming weeks if supply conditions do not improve. Rising procurement costs and continued shortages are expected to keep pressure on the market.

Suppliers also reported slower movement of stocks in certain regions, which has further constrained supplies and contributed to the upward trend in prices.

The latest increase has added to the challenges faced by households already struggling with higher living costs. Consumers said repeated price hikes in essential commodities, including sugar, are increasing monthly expenses and weakening purchasing power.

Industry observers stressed that stabilising supply chains and improving distribution mechanisms will be crucial to controlling price fluctuations. They noted that stronger market monitoring and timely interventions could help ease pressure on consumers.

Experts cautioned that if supply shortages persist, prices of sugar and other basic food items could continue to rise, placing additional strain on household budgets across Pakistan.
