Area under cane cultivation rises 1.5% year-on-year to 57.58 lakh hectare
India’s sugarcane area reached 57.58 lakh hectares as of 24 July, up 1.5% year-on-year and 6.2% above the normal area. It was among the few kharif crops to record acreage growth, while overall kharif sowing remained 4.7% below last year.
Area under sugarcane cultivation across India stood at 57.58 lakh hectare as on July 24, up 1.5 per cent from 56.72 lakh hectare sown as on the corresponding date last year, according to data released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
The current sowing area was 6.2 per cent higher than the normal area of 54.20 lakh hectare, calculated as the average for 2020-21 to 2024-25, the data showed. It remained 2.1 per cent below the final area coverage of 58.84 lakh hectare recorded for the full 2025 season, as sowing for the current season was still in progress.
Sugarcane was among the few crops to register a year-on-year rise in area coverage, the ministry’s data showed, at a time when overall Kharif sowing across major crops was running behind last year’s pace. Total area sown under all Kharif crops covered in the report stood at 787.37 lakh hectare, down 4.7 per cent from 826.19 lakh hectare a year earlier.
Rice, pulses, coarse cereals, oilseeds and cotton all recorded lower acreage than during the same period last year. Coarse cereals sowing fell 11.9 per cent, pulses declined 7.5 per cent, cotton was down 3.9 per cent, oilseeds slipped 2.1 per cent and rice acreage was 2.6 per cent lower. Jute and mesta rose 2.1 per cent, along with sugarcane, against the broader declining trend.
The ministry’s report, issued as part of its regular tracking of area coverage under Kharif crops, showed sowing activity continuing across the country, with final figures for the season expected to be updated in subsequent releases.
