Maharashtra sugar industry facing severe financial crisis, says Hasan Mushrif
Maharashtra’s sugar industry is facing a severe financial crisis, with several mills burdened by mounting debts and operational stress, minister Hasan Mushrif said. He urged central support through soft loans, loan restructuring and higher ethanol prices, while state leaders discussed sugar-sector relief measures with the Centre in Delhi.
Kolhapur: Maharashtra’s sugar industry is passing through a deep financial crisis, with several sugar factories struggling under mounting debt burdens, said State medical education minister Hasan Mushrif.
Speaking to the media, Mushrif said the situation in the sector had become so difficult that one sugar factory owner expressed extreme distress, saying that “the time has come for collective suicide.” He cited rising financial pressure, bank liabilities and operational challenges as major reasons behind the worsening condition of sugar mills.
The minister said Chief Minister and Deputy Chief Minister had travelled to Delhi to discuss issues related to the sugar and onion sectors with the Centre.
Describing the crisis as serious, he said many sugar factories were finding it difficult to cope with increasing debt and financial stress.
He expressed hope that the Central government would come forward with relief measures for the industry, including soft loans for sugar factories, restructuring of existing loans and an increase in ethanol prices to improve the financial position of mills.
During the interaction, Mushrif also commented on the Gokul election, meetings within the Nationalist Congress Party and developments related to Mahayuti politics.
