Centre withdraws Draft Sugarcane Control Order 2026 for fresh review
India has withdrawn the draft Sugarcane (Control) Order, 2026 after receiving feedback from state governments and industry stakeholders. The Centre said the proposed replacement for the 1966 order requires further review and consultation before any revised version is considered.
The Government has withdrawn the draft Sugarcane (Control) Order, 2026 following suggestions and feedback received from state governments and stakeholders during the consultation process.
In an office memorandum dated May 29, 2026, the Department of Food and Public Distribution under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said the draft order would be revisited before further action.
The draft Sugarcane (Control) Order, 2026 had earlier been circulated on April 20, 2026 for public comments and suggestions as part of efforts to revise the existing Sugarcane (Control) Order, 1966. Stakeholders were given one month to submit their views.
According to the memorandum, comments and suggestions were received from state governments and other stakeholders, after which the Centre decided that the proposed order required further review.
The order formally stated that the draft Sugarcane (Control) Order, 2026 “is hereby withdrawn.”
The communication was sent to several ministries and organisations, including the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ministry of Cooperation and the Department of Legal Affairs.
Copies were also shared with principal secretaries of sugarcane-producing states, the National Sugar Institute in Kanpur, Vasantdada Sugar Institute in Pune, sugar industry associations and sugar mill managements across the country.
