India achieves milestone in wheat production, 120.65 million tonnes produced in 2025-26
India achieved a record 120.65 million tonnes of wheat production in the 2025-26 Rabi season, exceeding last year by 2.71 million tonnes. Higher yields from climate-resilient varieties boosted output, with Uttar Pradesh remaining the largest producer despite weather-related challenges in some regions.
Achieving another milestone, India has witnessed a record production of 120.65 million tonnes (MT) during the 2025-26 Rabi season.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare has issued a third advance estimate, claiming that the country has surpassed last year’s production of 117.94 MT even after weather-related challenges in some regions.
The country has recorded an increase of around 2.71 MTs compared with last year. Wheat was cultivated across 336 lakh hectares, resulting in record production.
The scientists of the Indian Institute of Wheat and Barley Research (IIWBR) attributed the high-level production to high-yield climate-resilient varieties. However, the final estimate is yet to come, but the scientists consider there would be no major change in production.
“This production is above the fixed target of around 120 MTs, making the country not self-sufficient in foodgrains but also enabling a certain quantity of it for export. No doubt, there were some climate-related issues in some regions, but the high-yielding climate-resilient varieties contributed a lot in achieving this target,” said Dr Ratan Tiwari, Director, ICAR-IIWBR.
The data collected by The Tribune shows Uttar Pradesh is the leading state in wheat production. It produced 35.87 MTs on 96.13 lakh hectares, slightly higher than last year’s production of 35.65 MTs.
Similarly, Madhya Pradesh registered a production of 26.44 MTs on 81.96 lakh hectares, compared to 24.50 MTs in the previous year.
With a production of 17.07 MTs from 34.59 lakh hectares, Punjab is in third place in the country, but it was lower than last year’s 17.99 MTs, indicating the impact of adverse weather conditions and other regional factors.
Rajasthan has produced 12.15 MTs on 33.54 lakh hectares, up from 11.27 MTs last year. Similarly, Haryana has recorded a production of 11.64 MTs on 24.47 lakh hectares in comparison to a production of 11.40 MTs last year.
Bihar has recorded a production of 6.9 MT from 7.18 last year, while Gujarat has produced 4.61 MT, significantly higher than 3.86 MT last year. Maharashtra witnessed a production of 2.38 MT, compared to 2.28 MT in the previous year, said the data.
Uttarakhand has recorded a production of 0.82 MT, marginally lower than last year’s production of 0.85 MT, the data further stated.
