Indonesia : 5.24 Million Ton Rice Stock, Government Optimistic to Face Drought Threat
Indonesia said its food reserves are sufficient to face potential El Niño impacts, with 5.24 million tonnes of government rice stocks, supported by regional reserves. The government also maintains corn, sugar, cooking oil and chicken reserves, while highlighting rapid progress toward food self-sufficiency and stable domestic food supplies.
JAKARTA – The government ensures that the national food reserves are in a safe condition to face the potential dry season due to the El Nino phenomenon. Food stock strengthening continues to be carried out to maintain the stability of supply and prices, while ensuring that community needs are still met in all areas.
Based on data from the National Food Agency (Bapanas) reported by Bakom RI, Wednesday, July 22, until July 20, 2026, the Government Food Reserve (CPP) in the form of rice managed by Perum Bulog has reached 5.24 million tons. This amount is the main capital of the government in anticipating potential production disruptions due to extreme weather.
In addition to national rice reserves, the government has also strengthened stocks through the Regional Government Food Reserve (CPPD). As of the end of June 2026, food reserves at the provincial level reached 7,350 tons, while at the district and city levels, 13,150 tons were recorded, spread across 323 areas.
The reserve is prepared to accelerate the handling of food needs in the region, including during disasters and disruptions in distribution and supply.
The government also maintains the availability of other strategic commodities. As of July 20, 2026, the feed corn reserves reached 176 thousand tons and continued to be distributed to poultry farmers through the Food Supply and Price Stabilization (SPHP) program to maintain production costs and curb price increases.
Meanwhile, the stock of cooking oil managed by Perum Bulog and ID Food reached 1 thousand kiloliters. The government also has a reserve of about 2,790 tons of consumer sugar and a reserve of 38 tons of chicken meat.
For horticultural commodities such as chili, red onions, and broiler eggs, the government believes that the community’s needs can still be met from domestic production, which to date is still above the national consumption level.
The Head of the National Food Agency (Bapanas) who is also the Minister of Agriculture, Andi Amran Sulaiman, said that Indonesia’s food security is now getting stronger.
According to him, the target of food self-sufficiency, which was originally projected to be achieved in four years, was realized in just one year.
“We are self-sufficient. The President asked us to be self-sufficient, a four-year plan, but thank God we achieved it in one year. We already know how to be self-sufficient in corn, how to be self-sufficient in rice. The most difficult thing is rice, but we can realize our dream,” said Amran, Tuesday.
With the increasing food reserves and domestic production maintained, the government is optimistic that Indonesia has adequate food security to face the impact of El Nino while maintaining the stability of the supply and price of national food.
