Bihar Sets 809-Lakh-Quintal Sugarcane Target; West Champaran Accounts For 526 Lakh
Bihar has set an 809 lakh quintal sugarcane crushing target for 10 operational sugar mills in 2026-27, with West Champaran accounting for 526 lakh quintals. Cane from new cultivation areas will supply nearby mills, while new Sakri and Raiyam mills are planned for future seasons.
Patna: Bihar has set a combined target of 809 lakh quintals of sugarcane crushing for the 2026-27 season across its 10 operational sugar mills.
The five mills in West Champaran have been assigned the largest share, with a combined target of 526 lakh quintals. The district remains the largest centre of Bihar’s sugarcane industry, with half of the state’s operational mills located there.
West Champaran Gets Largest Share
The five sugar mills in West Champaran have been assigned crushing targets ranging from 43 lakh to 165 lakh quintals.
In the 2025-26 season, the same five mills collectively crushed more than 569 lakh quintals of sugarcane. The target for the upcoming season has been set in the context of expanded sugarcane cultivation across districts that currently do not have operational sugar mills.
Why The Crushing Target Has Increased
According to the information provided by the state authorities, sugarcane cultivation targets have also been set for districts where no sugar mills are currently operating.
Cane produced in these areas will be supplied to nearby operational mills for crushing. The remaining cane is expected to be available for the jaggery industry.
Sugar mills are currently operational in only five districts of Bihar, with West Champaran having the highest concentration.
Two New Sugar Mills Planned
Foundation stones for the proposed Sakri sugar mill in Darbhanga and Raiyam sugar mill in Madhubani are scheduled to be laid in November.
No crushing target has been assigned to either mill for the 2026-27 season because crushing operations are not expected to begin before the following season.
As a result, sugarcane from the surrounding areas is expected to be supplied to existing mills, including the Riga sugar mill in Sitamarhi.

- Sugauli, East Champaran: 45 lakh quintals
- Riga, Sitamarhi: 45 lakh quintals
- Lauriya, West Champaran: 43 lakh quintals
West Champaran Remains Bihar’s Main Sugar Hub
West Champaran accounts for five of Bihar’s 10 operational sugar mills, giving the district the largest share of the state’s total crushing target.
Gopalganj has two operational mills, while Samastipur, East Champaran and Sitamarhi have one each. The distribution of mills explains West Champaran’s dominant share of the state’s sugarcane crushing target.
The 2026-27 crushing season will determine how much cane is processed by the existing mills, while the proposed facilities in Darbhanga and Madhubani are expected to add processing capacity in subsequent seasons.
