Kenya’s domestic sugar production declined significantly in 2025, falling to 7.04 million metric tonnes from a record 9.33 million tonnes in 2024, according to data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).
The latest production figure marks a sharp reversal after output had increased steadily from 6.89 million metric tonnes in 2020 to 8.59 million tonnes in 2022, The Star reported.
Production then dropped to 5.48 million tonnes in 2023 before recovering strongly in 2024, when it reached a record 9.33 million tonnes.
The decline recorded in 2025 could put additional pressure on domestic sugar supplies and raise concerns over Kenya’s production capacity and efforts to strengthen local food production.
