Iran expands grain storage and re-export capacity
Iran has commissioned a 70,000-tonne grain storage facility at Bandar Abbas, aiming to develop the port into a grain processing and re-export hub. The country plans to import grain, process it into flour and other value-added products, and export them to neighbouring and African markets.
A new grain storage facility with a capacity of 70 thsd tons has been commissioned in the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas. The facility is expected to expand the country’s capacity for grain storage, processing and subsequent re-exports.
The new facility is located in Hormozgan Province, which has major seaports, access to international trade routes and proximity to regional markets. Iran plans to use this strategic location to develop Bandar Abbas as a hub for grain trade and processing.
Iranian Agriculture Minister Gholamreza Nouri said the country’s existing grain storage and flour milling capacity already exceeds domestic demand. The government therefore plans to make greater use of this surplus capacity to import grain, process it and subsequently export value-added products.
Under the plan, Iran will import grain from producing countries, particularly those to its north. The imported grain will be processed into flour and other value-added products before being shipped to foreign markets.
Iran sees neighboring countries and African markets as key destinations for these products. According to the government, the strategy should help utilize surplus grain storage and processing capacity, increase exports and improve the efficiency of processing facilities.
