WISMA assures adequate sugar supply, cites steady monthly quota releases
WISMA said Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa sugar mills have sufficient stocks and are complying with government sale quotas despite market concerns. Maharashtra’s August quota is 7.75 lakh tonnes. Mills plan to begin the 2026–27 crushing season in October, ensuring fresh supplies while maintaining farmer payments and affordable availability.
The West Indian Sugar Mills Association (WISMA) has said sufficient sugar stock is available with mills and reaffirmed commitment to comply with government directives, amid concerns over sugar availability and prices during August 2026, according to a public interest statement issued by the association.
WISMA, which has represented public and private sugar mills across Maharashtra, Gujarat and Goa since 2013, said each sugar mill is allotted a prescribed monthly quantity for sale under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and the Sugar (Control) Order, 2025. The monthly sugar stock release quota for Maharashtra stood at 7,78,206 tonnes in June 2026, 7,18,170 tonnes in July and 7,75,003 tonnes in August, against an all-India quota of 22.50 lakh tonnes, 22 lakh tonnes and 22.50 lakh tonnes for the respective months, the statement said.
WISMA member mills have been complying with the Centre’s prescribed sugar-sale orders, and while market prices are showing fluctuations depending on demand, sufficient stock is available with mills, according to the statement. The association said it continues to comply with directives issued by the central and state governments from time to time.
The new sugar season 2026-27 is scheduled to commence from October 2026, WISMA said. As per a decision of the Maharashtra government’s cabinet committee, member mills will commence crushing operations and adequate quantities of new-season sugar will be available in the market, the association added.
WISMA said it remains committed to the interests of sugarcane-producing farmers, member mills and retail consumers, noting that sugarcane Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) dues are paid to farmers by mills on time every year as directed by the central government. The association said it continues to work towards ensuring sugar is available to the public at reasonable and affordable prices.
Considering current demand-supply conditions, WISMA member sugar mills reaffirmed their commitment to comply with directives of the central and Maharashtra governments and to ensure adequate sugar supply, the statement said. The note was issued by Ajit Chougule, Executive Director, and B.B. Thombare, President, along with WISMA’s executive committee members.
