Pakistan : Karachi Faces Another Flour Price Hike
Karachi’s wheat and flour prices have risen again, with No. 2.5 flour reaching Rs160/kg retail and fine flour Rs175/kg. Wheat rose to Rs130/kg, prompting flour mills to seek immediate imports of 2 million tonnes.
Wheat and flour prices have increased once again in Karachi following a rise in wheat prices, ARY News reported.
Flour mills have raised the rates of fine flour and No. 2.5 flour. The price of No. 2.5 flour has increased by Rs15 per kilogram, taking the flour mills’ rate to Rs145 per kilogram. Its retail price has gone up to Rs160 per kilogram.
Fine flour has also become Rs13 per kilogram more expensive, with the flour mills’ rate reaching Rs155 per kilogram. In the retail market, fine flour is now being sold for up to Rs175 per kilogram.
The price of chakki flour has increased by Rs10 per kilogram and is now selling for up to Rs180 per kilogram.
Wheat has also become Rs15 per kilogram more expensive, pushing its price to Rs130 per kilogram.
Flour mills said they could not buy expensive wheat and sell flour at the government-fixed rate. They have demanded that the government immediately import 2 million tonnes of wheat.
The price hike is expected to further burden consumers already facing rising food costs.
