Mitti Labs in 5 year deal with Google to scale climate smart rice farming in India
Mitti Labs has partnered with Google under a five-year carbon credit agreement to scale climate-smart practices across 1 lakh hectares of Indian rice farms. The initiative will support 70,000 farmers, targeting 3 million tonnes of near-term warming impact reduction and major water savings.
Deep-tech company Mitti Labs has announced a five-year carbon credit arrangement with Google to scale climate-smart agriculture across 1 lakh hectares of smallholder rice farms in India. The announcement follows Mitti Labs’ recent funding round, in which the company raised $9.5 million, showing an increase in momentum for using agriculture as a climate solution, the company said in a statement.
By transitioning over 70,000 farmers to water- and methane-saving irrigation practices, this partnership aims to eliminate 3 million tonnes of near-term warming impact (GWP20, equivalent to 1 million tonnes of GWP100 impact) while conserving billions of gallons of water across critical regional basins.
“Google is committed to finding the most promising solutions that neutralise warming across both the near and long term. Mitti Labs’ approach delivers critical near-term atmospheric impact by cutting methane emissions, while conserving billions of gallons of water and empowering smallholder farmers to deploy advanced water-management practices. We’re excited to partner with them to help accelerate and scale their solution across India,” said Kate Brandt, chief sustainability officer at Google.
