Nepal imports rice and paddy worth nearly Rs 1.8 billion in a month
Nepal imported 24,939 tonnes of paddy and rice worth Rs 1.78 billion in the first month of FY 2082/83, down significantly from last year. Most imports came from India, including rice, Basmati rice, paddy and broken rice.

According to data from the Department of Customs, Nepal imported 24,939 tonnes of paddy and rice worth Rs 1.78 billion in Shrawan, the first month of the fiscal year. The imports amounted to 24.94 million kilograms. Paddy and rice imports declined compared to the same month last fiscal year. In Shrawan of fiscal year 2081/82 BS, Nepal imported 57,083 tonnes of paddy and rice worth Rs 2.93 billion.
The data shows a decline in both the volume of imports and the amount spent on them during the first month of the current fiscal year compared to the corresponding period last year. A breakdown of the imports shows that the largest amount was spent on rice. In Shrawan, Nepal imported 11,852 tonnes of rice worth Rs 833.32 million. Almost the entire quantity—11,851 tonnes—was imported from neighbouring India, while a negligible 0.24 tonnes (240 kg) came from Italy.
Basmati rice ranked second in terms of import value. Nepal imported 4,125 tonnes of Basmati rice worth Rs 568.59 million in Shrawan, all of which came from India. In addition to milled rice, Nepal also imports a significant quantity of unmilled paddy. In the first month of the current fiscal year, 8,628 tonnes of paddy worth Rs 365.02 million were imported, all from India.
Similarly, Nepal spent millions of rupees importing broken rice. In Shrawan alone, 332 tonnes of broken rice worth Rs 13.31 million were imported from India. The customs data also shows that small quantities of brown rice and paddy seeds were imported, in addition to the larger volumes of paddy, rice and broken rice.
Nepal imported 625 kg of brown rice worth Rs 89,000 in Shrawan, of which 500 kg came from Thailand and 125 kg from India. Likewise, 67 kg of paddy seeds worth Rs 501,000 were imported during the first month of the current fiscal year. More paddy seeds were imported from China than from India.
