Indonesia plans rice exports to Malaysia
Indonesia plans to begin exporting premium rice to Malaysia with an initial shipment of 1,000 tonnes, potentially increasing annual exports to 200,000 tonnes. BULOG said strong domestic stocks of 5.2 million tonnes would safeguard local supplies, while Malaysia remains dependent on rice imports to meet demand.
JAKARTA, INDONESIA — With sufficient rice stocks on hand, Indonesia plans to enter the export market with 1,000 tonnes of premium rice for Malaysia, according to state food logistics agency BULOG.
A memorandum of understanding recently was signed between BULOG and Malaysia’s Padi dan Beras Borneo Sdn. Bhd. in Jakarta.
The initial shipment of 1,000 tonnes is expected to be the first consignment under the partnership, with annual exports seen gradually increasing to 200,000 tonnes, according to BULOG.
Indonesian Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman said the country has about 5.2 million tonnes of rice stocks and food exports would not undermine domestic supplies, news agency ANTARA reported.
According to the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Department of Agriculture, Indonesia’s milled rice production is forecast at 33.6 million tonnes for marketing year 2026-27.
Rice consumption in Malaysia continues to rise steadily, driven by population growth, the FAS said. As domestic output remains insufficient to meet demand, imports are expected to remain stable at around 1.6 million tonnes.
