India’s sugarcane sowing area dips 0.41 lakh hectares as of August 28
Sugarcane acreage in India declined marginally to 58.46 lakh hectares as of August 28, 2026, from 58.87 lakh hectares a year earlier, but remained above the normal area of 54.20 lakh hectares. Bihar and Uttarakhand saw major declines, while Uttar Pradesh and Haryana recorded gains.
The area sown under sugarcane during the ongoing Kharif 2026-27 season stood at 58.46 lakh hectares as on August 28, 2026, marking a decline of 0.41 lakh hectares from the 58.87 lakh hectares recorded during the corresponding period last year, according to the Progressive Crop Area Sown Report released by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare.
The reported sugarcane acreage remained above the normal sown area of 54.20 lakh hectares as estimated by the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the data showed.
The decline in coverage was led by Bihar, where the sown area fell by 0.30 lakh hectares, and Uttarakhand, which saw a reduction of 0.20 lakh hectares, among other states, as per the release. These losses were partly offset by higher coverage in Uttar Pradesh, up 0.36 lakh hectares, and Haryana, up 0.21 lakh hectares.
According to the report, the overall fall in sugarcane area was mainly attributable to substantial reductions in Bihar, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra, Punjab and Madhya Pradesh, which outweighed the gains recorded in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, along with smaller increases in Assam, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.
The sugarcane data formed part of the wider Kharif sowing update, under which the total area sown across all crops stood at 1,071.10 lakh hectares as on August 28, 2026, down 18.91 lakh hectares from 1,090.01 lakh hectares in the year-ago period, the release showed.
The weekly area coverage figures, compiled from the Crop Weather Watch Group (CWWG), are tracked through the Kharif season to assess crop-wise progress against normal sown area benchmarks and year-on-year trends.
