India raises wheat procurement target by 15%
India has raised its wheat procurement target by 15% to 34.5 million tonnes for the current season to support farmers affected by unseasonal rains. Targets were increased in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan, while quality norms were relaxed. With opening stocks, government wheat availability could reach 56.5 million tonnes.
The Indian government has increased its wheat procurement target under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) program by 15% to 34.5 mln tons for the current season. The previous target was 30 mln tons. The decision is aimed at supporting farmers whose crops were damaged by unseasonal rains.
Along with the nationwide target, the government revised procurement targets for key producing states. Wheat purchases in Madhya Pradesh are expected to reach 10 mln tons, while Uttar Pradesh is targeted at 2.5 mln tons and Rajasthan at 2.35 mln tons. Smaller volumes are also expected to be procured in Uttarakhand and Delhi.
To facilitate higher purchases, the government has relaxed wheat quality requirements in major producing states, including Punjab, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. This will allow government agencies to procure more grain from farmers whose crops were affected by unseasonal rainfall and hailstorms.
Combined with opening wheat stocks of around 22 mln tons in MY 2026/27, the higher procurement target could bring total government wheat availability to approximately 56.5 mln tons. The move is intended both to support farmers and maintain substantial supplies for the domestic market.
Meanwhile, India’s wheat production in the 2025/26 crop year is expected to be somewhat lower due to adverse weather. According to the government estimate, the harvest could total 110–120 mln tons, as unseasonal rains and hailstorms damaged crops in key producing regions.
