Iran harvests record 14.1 mln tons of wheat

Iran’s wheat production reached a record 14.1 million tonnes despite drought, erratic rainfall, sanctions and economic challenges. Domestic agriculture meets 85% of food needs. Authorities plan to boost sustainable rain-fed farming, productivity and food security, while increasing oilseed production to 600,000 tonnes.

Iran’s wheat production has reached a record 14.1 mln tons, the highest level in the country’s history. The figure was announced by Iran’s Deputy Minister of Agriculture Majid Anjafi.

According to him, around 85% of Iran’s food needs are currently met by domestic production, while imports account for about 15%.

Production increased despite last year’s drought, erratic rainfall, sanctions and economic difficulties. Total agricultural and horticultural output rose by 7 mln tons, supported by improved performance across the agricultural sector.

Going forward, Iran plans to focus on sustainable crop production in rain-fed areas, where farming largely depends on natural precipitation. The authorities also intend to continue measures aimed at improving productivity and strengthening food security.

Increasing oilseed production will be another priority. Iran plans to raise output to 600 thsd tons and secure stable funding for programs aimed at expanding domestic agricultural production.
