US wheat sales and shipments decline in mid-September
US new-crop wheat export sales fell 18% week-on-week to 267,600 tonnes in the week ended September 17, while shipments declined 23% to 385,100 tonnes. Mexico led demand, followed by Japan and Vietnam for sales, while Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia received major shipments.
US export sales of new-crop wheat totaled 267.6 thsd tons in the week ended September 17. According to USDA FAS, this was 18% lower than the previous week and 13% below the average for the prior four weeks.
Mexico was the largest buyer of US wheat, purchasing 113.4 thsd tons. Japan bought 87.6 thsd tons, while Vietnam purchased 60 thsd tons.
Actual export shipments also slowed. The US shipped 385.1 thsd tons of wheat during the week, down 23% w/w and 19% below the four-week average.
Mexico remained the main destination for physical shipments at 160 thsd tons. Thailand received 66.5 thsd tons, the Philippines 65.1 thsd tons, and Indonesia 36 thsd tons.
Overall, both new export sales and actual US wheat shipments slowed in mid-September. Mexico, Japan and Southeast Asian markets nevertheless continued to account for the bulk of demand for US wheat.
