Delayed wheat payments threaten Syria’s next planting season

Syrian farmers face funding shortages ahead of the next planting season as government payments for procured wheat remain delayed. The Syrian Grain Establishment purchased 2.75 million tonnes in 2026 but has paid for only 37%, with cash shortages and state bank processing difficulties cited as reasons.

Delays in government payments for procured wheat are threatening Syrian farmers’ ability to finance the next planting season. Some farmers have been waiting for more than four months to be paid after delivering their crops to the state in June.

The Syrian Grain Establishment procured around 2.75 mln tonnes of wheat during the 2026 season but has so far paid for only 37% of the total volume. The delays are leaving farmers short of funds to prepare for the next planting season.

Officials have cited cash shortages and difficulties faced by state banks in processing payments as the main reasons for the delays. The situation is adding to financial pressure on farmers ahead of the next planting campaign.
