Russia seeks to retain its share of Egypt’s wheat market
Russia has pledged to meet Egypt’s grain requirements despite severe Black Sea shipping restrictions, with exporters rerouting supplies through Baltic Sea ports. The alternative routes could increase freight costs and delivery times, potentially weakening Russian wheat’s competitiveness and creating opportunities for rival suppliers.
Russia has declared its readiness to fully meet Egypt’s grain requirements despite severe shipping restrictions in the Black Sea. Moscow is seeking to maintain its presence in one of its key export markets by using alternative supply routes. This was reported by TASS, citing Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Georgy Borisenko.
According to the Russian diplomat, the difficult situation in the Black Sea and the near-total suspension of much of the vessel traffic have forced Russian exporters to use Baltic Sea ports. Nevertheless, Moscow insists that it is prepared to fully cover Egypt’s grain needs despite logistical challenges.
Egypt has traditionally been one of the world’s largest wheat importers and an important buyer of Russian grain. Maintaining supplies to this market is therefore strategically important for Russia. Losing some Egyptian contracts could intensify competition among exporters and force Russian suppliers to seek alternative buyers.
Rerouting grain shipments from Black Sea ports to the Baltic Sea creates additional logistical challenges. Longer routes to Egypt could increase freight costs and delivery times, reducing the price competitiveness of Russian wheat. Under these circumstances, alternative suppliers may have opportunities to strengthen their positions in the Egyptian market.
The Russian statement reflects Moscow’s determination to maintain its export ties with Cairo despite disruptions to traditional Black Sea logistics. However, the pledge to meet all of Egypt’s grain requirements remains a political declaration: the Russian diplomat provided no specific figures for future shipments, new contracts or confirmed logistics capacity.
