Uttar Pradesh in bottom two in Sept sugar inflation table, Tamil Nadu tops

Uttar Pradesh ranked among the two states with the lowest sugar inflation in September, while Tamil Nadu recorded the highest, according to a BusinessLine analysis. Nationwide sugar inflation surged from 4.92% in July to over 24% in August and approximately 30% in September, increasing festive household expenses.

Uttar Pradesh ranked among the bottom two of 12 States for sugar inflation in September, while Tamil Nadu topped the list, an analysis by businessline showed. Driven by a sudden spike in inflation for sugar, liquid milk and sweets since August, prices continued to rise in September, straining festive budgets.

The analysis included three months inputs from eSankhyiki, a data platform developed by Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation. The micro data is part of retail inflation based on Consumer Price Index (CPI). It may be noted that retail inflation surged to a nearly two-year high of 5.5 per cent in September, driven by a continued acceleration in food and fuel inflation. Sugar, milk and milk based products are part of the food basket.

Analysis found that at all India level, sugar inflation in July was 4.92 per cent, which jumped to over 24 per cent in August and then reached around 30 per cent in September. Similarly, for 12 large States and UTs, it was in the range of 3.37 to 6.29 per cent, but in September, the range rose to around 25 to 35 per cent. In July, among 12 States under consideration, West Bengal recorded lowest inflation, while Maharashtra was on top.
