Telangana steps up monitoring of rice prices, threatens legal action against hoarders
Telangana has warned rice millers and wholesale traders against hoarding, artificial shortages and unjustified price increases, threatening strict legal action. Civil Supplies officials directed traders to maintain stable prices and uninterrupted supplies, while ensuring sufficient stocks for potential special distribution counters to protect consumers.
The Telangana government has warned rice millers and wholesale traders against hoarding, unjustified price increases and practices that could create artificial shortages, saying strict legal action will be taken against those found violating the rules, The Times of India reported.
Civil Supplies Commissioner M Stephen Raveendra issued the warning on Wednesday, asking traders to maintain price stability and ensure an uninterrupted supply of rice in the market.
Following the commissioner’s directions, Civil Supplies Director GV Shyam Prasad Lal held a meeting with rice millers and wholesale traders from Miryalaguda, Nizamabad and Nalgonda at the Civil Supplies Bhavan.
Officials said the rice stocks currently available in the market were from the previous agricultural season and that there was no reason for unusual price increases. Millers and traders were instructed to maintain stable prices and prevent disruptions in supply.
The department also cautioned against illegal stockpiling and attempts to restrict market availability, stating that such practices would invite stringent action.
Officials sought the cooperation of industry participants in the government’s efforts to contain rice prices and safeguard consumer interests. Traders were also asked to ensure sufficient stock availability in case the government decides to operate special distribution counters to help regulate prices and provide relief to consumers.
