Bangladesh: Over 100pc Aman farming target achieved in Khulna region
Farmers in Bangladesh’s Khulna agriculture region cultivated 290,010 hectares of Aman rice, achieving 100.1% of the target, helped by canal-digging that reduced waterlogging. Production targets total 1.285 million tonnes of paddy, while coarse Aman prices are expected at Taka 1,350–1,400 per 40 kg.
KHULNA – Farmers in the Khulna agriculture region have achieved 100.1% of the Aman rice target this season, as the canal-digging programme has helped remove waterlogging from low-lying lands and balance rainfall, an official said today.
Along with the super bumper yield of the staple foodgrain, farmers are happy and expect to get excellent prices for coarse variety Aman paddy, which will range between Taka 1,350 and Taka 1,400 per maund (per 40 kg) in the local market.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) has fixed a plantation target of 2,99,859 hectares of land with a production target of 8,56,974 tonnes of clean rice (12,85,461 metric tons of paddy) in Khulna, Bagerhat, Satkhira and Narail districts of the region, said Md Rafiqul Islam, Additional Director of DAE in Khulna Agriculture Region.
The government has already given over Taka 6 crore to 75,400 farmers as incentives to increase Ropa Aman production.
“Farmers have cultivated Aman paddy on 2, 90,010 hectares of land, up by 151 hectares against the fixed farming target,” he said.
In Khulna district, 87,469 hectares of land have been cultivated against the farming target of 88,351 hectares with a production target of 4,08,308 metric tonnes of paddy and 2,72,205 metric tonnes of clean rice.
In Bagerhat district, 68,706 hectares of land have been cultivated against the farming target of 68,893 hectares of land, with a production target of 2,71,688 metric tonnes of paddy and 1,81,125 metric tonnes of clean rice.
In Satkhira district, 90,160 hectares of land have been cultivated against the farming target of 89,150 hectares with a production target of 3,98,780 metric tonnes of paddy and 2,65,853 metric tonnes of clean rice.
In Narail district, 43,675 hectares of land have been cultivated against the farming target of 43,465 hectares of land, with a production target of 2,06,686 metric tonnes of paddy and 1,37,791 metric tonnes of clean rice.
The farmers have now put their all-out efforts into nursing the growing Aman rice plants on vast tracts of croplands that have worn an eye-catching look.
Talking to BSS, Md Rafiqul Islam, Additional Director of Khulna Agriculture Region, hoped that farmers would sell their products at excellent prices in local markets this season.
