Canada sharply increases wheat and barley exports at start of season
Canada’s wheat and barley exports surged in MY 2026/27. Wheat exports reached 1.556 million tonnes, up 50.1% year-on-year, while barley shipments rose 2.4 times to 135,900 tonnes. Producer deliveries also increased sharply, indicating strong early-season grain flows despite a weekly decline in barley exports.
Canada has significantly increased wheat and barley exports since the start of the MY 2026/27. In the week ended August 23, 511.5 thsd tons of wheat were exported through licensed elevators, up 18.4% from the previous week.
Since the beginning of the season, Canadian wheat exports have reached 1.556 mln tons, up 50.1% from the same period last year. At this point a year ago, Canada had exported 1.037 mln tons of wheat.
Producer deliveries of wheat have also more than doubled. Since the start of the 2026/27 season, 1.105 mln tons have been delivered to licensed elevators, compared with 537.7 thsd tons during the same period of the previous season.
Barley exports are showing even stronger growth. Since the beginning of the season, Canada has shipped 135.9 thsd tons, 2.4 times the 57.8 thsd tons exported a year earlier. However, weekly barley exports fell by 46.9% to 22.3 thsd tons from 42 thsd tons the previous week.
Producer deliveries of barley also remain well above last year’s level. Since the start of the season, they have reached 192.1 thsd tons, up 53.9% from 124.8 thsd tons a year earlier. Thus, despite the weekly decline in barley shipments, exports of both grains are running well ahead of last year’s pace at the start of the season.
