Centre alone can fix sugarcane FRP, says Karnataka minister Satish Jarkiholi
Karnataka minister Satish Jarkiholi said only the Centre can fix sugarcane FRP, rejecting farmer organisations’ demand for Rs 6,000 as a state decision. Karnataka has urged the Centre to raise FRP but has received no discussion invitation. Progress also depends on agreement between sugar factories and farmers.
Belagavi: Karnataka minister Satish Jarkiholi said only the Centre, and not the state government, has the authority to fix the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane at Rs 6,000, as demanded by farmer organisations, The Times of India reported. Speaking to reporters in Khanapur, Jarkiholi said the Karnataka government had sent a memorandum to the Centre requesting an increase in sugarcane FRP.
“We have been urging the Centre to increase the FRP every year, but no revision has been made so far. There is a possibility of an increase this year,” he said.
Jarkiholi said the state government had not yet received an invitation from the Centre for discussions on the issue. He added that further progress could be made only after sugar factories and farmers arrived at an understanding.
