Farmers pin hopes on Delhi meeting for higher sugar MSP, C-heavy molasses price

Farmers in Maharashtra and Karnataka are awaiting the October 12 Delhi meeting with the government on demands for a ₹50/kg sugar MSP and ₹70/litre C-heavy molasses price. They say higher input, harvesting and transport costs have increased financial pressure. The outcome could influence sugar mill crushing-season decisions.

New Delhi: Farmers in Maharashtra and Karnataka are looking to Monday’s (October 12) meeting between the government and farmer organisation representatives for progress on two key demands — raising the minimum selling price (MSP) of sugar to Rs 50 per kg and fixing the price of C-heavy molasses at Rs 70 per litre, Agrowon reported.

Farmers believe that resolving the issues of sugar MSP and the C-heavy molasses price could help them secure the expected price for sugarcane.

The meeting was scheduled after the farmer organisations from Karnataka began an indefinite protest outside Union Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution Minister Pralhad Joshi’s residence in Hubballi. The government subsequently assured the protesters that a meeting would be held in Delhi, and the joint meeting has now been fixed for October 12.

Sugarcane growers in Maharashtra and Karnataka have been protesting amid financial pressure caused by rising inflation, higher prices of fertilisers and agricultural medicines, and increased sugarcane harvesting and transportation costs.

Farmer organisations from both states have joined hands to press for a sugar MSP of Rs 50 per kg and a C-heavy molasses price of Rs 70 per litre.

The outcome of the October 12 meeting is also expected to clear the uncertainty over the start of sugar mills for the upcoming crushing season. A positive discussion could help reduce opposition to the start of the season.

farmer organisations from Maharashtra and Karnataka, have been invited to attend the meeting in Delhi.
