Gujarat’s hydropower plants achieve remarkable electricity generation in August 2024

In August 2024, Gujarat’s hydropower generation soared to 1,067.3 million units (MU), a significant rise from July’s 308.7 MU. This increase is attributed to full-capacity dams and abundant monsoon rains. Major contributors include the Sardar Sarovar Dam, generating over 800 MU, and the Ukai and Kadana dams. Gujarat is advancing towards India’s 500 GW non-fossil fuel target by 2030, with ongoing projects in solar and hydro energy.

In August 2024, Gujarat’s hydropower plants achieved a remarkable electricity generation of 1,067.3 million units (MU), a substantial increase from the 308.7 MU recorded in July 2024. This notable surge is primarily due to the state’s dams reaching full capacity thanks to plentiful water inflows during the monsoon season, reported ANI.

The Sardar Sarovar Dam, a central component in Gujarat’s water and energy management, generated over 800 MU of electricity alone. Combined, the Sardar Sarovar River Bed Power House (RBPH) and Canal Head Power House (CHPH) contributed a total of 891 MU.

A closer look at the hydropower generation in August 2024 reveals significant contributions from various plants. The Ukai Dam produced 143.1 MU, while the Kadana Dam generated 30.9 MU. The Sardar Sarovar RBPH and CHPH power stations were major contributors, producing 757.1 MU and 134.3 MU, respectively.

Gujarat has demonstrated consistent growth in hydropower generation over the years. From 2019 to 2024, the state’s major dams, including Ukai, Kadana, Panam, and Sardar Sarovar, averaged an annual generation of 4,600 MU.

Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Gujarat is advancing towards India’s goal of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, aiming to increase the renewable energy share to at least 50 percent of the total installed capacity.

To enhance its renewable energy production, Gujarat is actively pursuing various projects such as solar rooftops, hydroelectric power plants, and large renewable energy parks. Recent heavy monsoon rains have further boosted these efforts, leading to record-breaking power generation from the state’s major dams.

The fiscal year 2022-23 saw a peak in hydropower generation with 6,170.456 MU, marking a 134 percent increase from the previous year. For the fiscal year 2023-24, the state’s total hydropower generation was 4,584.932 MU.

This success can be traced back to the foresight of former Chief Minister Narendra Modi, who established Gujarat as a leader in renewable energy. Under his leadership, Gujarat became the first state in India to create a Climate Change Department, paving the way for sustainable measures and progress toward energy transition and net-zero goals.

Gujarat continues to advance its renewable energy sector, significantly contributing to India’s clean energy objectives.
