India’s wheat production will likely be affected by climate this crop year

Experts warned that emerging El Niño conditions could affect India’s 2026/27 wheat crop by delaying kharif harvests and subsequent wheat sowing. Weather risks during the southwest monsoon may reduce production potential if adverse conditions persist through September.

India’s wheat production could be impacted by the climate this crop year (July 2026-June 207), with El Nino beginning to impact weather in the country, experts said at a wheat conclave last week.

Delayed harvest of kharif crops is on the cards. This could delay sowing of wheat, and the climate may come into play, said experts at a session on “Global wheat markets, policy, weather and price risk” at the Wheat Products Promotion Society CEO Conclave in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.

Jatin Singh, founder and managing director of Skymet, said the situation was bad for the south-west monsoon and by September, enough damage would have been done.
