Jaishankar warns of major food crisis amid fertiliser shortages, grain shipment disruptions
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar warned of a potential major food crisis in the Global South during an Asia Society event in New York, citing fertiliser shortages and grain disruptions from the Ukraine and Iran-Gulf conflicts alongside tight energy markets.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has warned of a potential “major food crisis” in the coming months, citing fertiliser shortages and disruptions to grain shipments linked to the Ukraine war and the Iran-Gulf conflict, Indian Express reported.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Asia Society in New York on Monday, Jaishankar said the combined impact of energy, food, fertiliser and financial pressures was creating significant stress for economies across the Global South.
Jaishankar said the Ukraine conflict and the Iran-Gulf conflict had had a “devastating impact” on Global South economies.
He highlighted the energy situation as a particular concern, saying the global market was “very tight”. According to him, political decisions affecting oil supplies could further complicate the situation and push prices higher at a time when countries are seeking greater stability.
He said the security and politics surrounding oil supplies were increasingly interacting with each other, creating what he described as a “double crisis or an aggravated crisis”.
Jaishankar also warned that disruptions to grain shipments and shortages of fertilisers could put additional pressure on food supplies in the coming months, raising concerns for countries that depend heavily on international markets for food and agricultural inputs.
