Karnataka, India’s third-largest sugar producer, has achieved 100% payment of ₹19,890 crore to sugarcane farmers for the 2023-24 season, setting an industry benchmark. By mid-November 2024, 40 mills in the state had crushed 26.25 lakh tonnes of cane, producing 2.10 lakh tonnes of sugar. This highlights Karnataka’s leadership in supporting farmers and stabilizing the sugar sector.

Karnataka, the third-largest sugar-producing state in India, has set a remarkable precedent in ensuring timely cane payments to farmers, with all sugar mills clearing their dues for the 2023-24 season.

According to the Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), as of November 14, 2024, Karnataka’s sugar mills have cleared 100 per cent of the cane dues for the 2023-24 season, with Rs 19,890 crore paid to farmers.

This accomplishment highlights the success of the government’s policies aimed at securing fair prices for sugarcane farmers and enhancing stability in the agricultural sector.

Karnataka’s commitment to fair and timely payments aligns with efforts made across other sugar-producing states in India to clear outstanding dues. However, the state’s sugar mills have stood out in leading the way, setting an example for others to follow. This progress shows Karnataka’s ongoing efforts to support sugarcane farmers and strengthen the overall sugar industry in the state.

In the ongoing 2024-25 season, Karnataka’s sugar industry is already showing progress. According to data released by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories Limited (NFCSF), by November 15, 40 sugar mills had commenced crushing operations, with sugar production reaching 2.10 lakh tonnes after crushing 26.25 lakh tonnes of sugarcane.

In the current 2024-25 season, sugar mills across India have also started making cane payments. In Uttar Pradesh, 39 mills have already begun making payments to farmers.
