Kenya : Govt announces new maize price for 90k bag, NCPB to buy produce
Agriculture and Livestock Cabinet Secretary Andrew Karanja announced that the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) will purchase maize at KSh 3,500 per 50kg bag, with the maize stored in the National Strategic Food Reserve. The projected 2024 long rains maize harvest is expected to reach 75.97 million bags, boosted by the government’s fertilizer subsidy program.
Agriculture and Livestock Cabinet Secretary (CS) Andrew Karanja set the price at KSh 3,500 per bag and noted that the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) will start buying g the produce immediately.
The purchased maize will be stored at the National Strategic Food Reserve.
Karanja said the new price will help farmers make profits as the cost of a bag currently retails at KSh 2,835.
“The maize projection for the 2024 long rains is projected to reach 75.97 million 50kg bags,” the CS stated, as reported by the government newspaper My Gov.
Karanja attributed the anticipated bumper harvest to the fertiliser subsidy programme launched by President William Ruto’s administration.
“During the 2022/2023 short rains, the Kenya Kwanza government launched a fertiliser subsidy programme to boost agricultural production and ensure food security for all Kenyans by reducing the cost of fertiliser to the current KSh 2,500 per 50kg bag,” Karanja explained.
