Maharashtra : FIR against sugar mill’s ex-chairman, 19 others for Rs 29.71cr irregularities

Police in Kolhapur registered a cheating case against former chairman Prakash Shripad Shahapurkar and 19 others of Appasaheb Nalawade Gadhinglaj Taluka Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana for financial irregularities causing a Rs 29.71 crore loss in 2023-24. Allegations include illegal distillery expansion, faulty procurement, and sugarcane transport fraud. The FIR, filed after an audit by Sushant Phadnis, cites several IPC sections, including criminal breach of trust and forgery.

Kolhapur: Police on Friday registered a case of cheating against a former chairman and 19 others associated with a cooperative sugar mill for irregularities that caused a loss of Rs 29.71 crore to the factory in the 2023-24 financial year. The FIR was registered at Gadhinglaj police station based a complaint by a factory-appointed auditor, Sushant Phadnis.

The complaint said during an audit of the last financial year, he found irregularities in the illegal expansion of the distillery, procurement of an old gearbox, boiler modification, turbine procurement, and sugar cane transportation dealings. Phadnis pegged the loss on account of these irregularities at Rs 11.42 crore.The complainant further said the then chairman had made decisions regarding factory expansion, modernisation, and procurements, which led to a loss of Rs 18.29 crore.

Prakash Shripad Shahapurkar was the chairman of Appasaheb Nalawade Gadhinglaj Taluka Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana during the audit period. Among the other individuals named in the FIR are the former executive directors and officers from various departments. The audit also found that the former executive directors and Shahapurkar were in a nexus for carrying out irregularities, Phadnis said in his complaint. Police have invoked section 420, 405, 403, 415, 409, 463, 427, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code against them.
