Maharashtra sets up committee to address sugar sector concerns ahead of new crushing season
Maharashtra has formed a high-level committee to address challenges in the sugar industry amid rising FRP costs and stagnant sugar MSP. The panel will assess issues, review industry demands, and recommend measures to support mills ahead of the 2026–27 crushing season.
The Maharashtra government has constituted a high-level committee under the Chief Secretary to examine challenges facing the sugar industry and recommend corrective measures.
The decision follows concerns from the sector over mounting financial pressure, particularly due to the unchanged minimum support price (MSP) of sugar even as sugarcane prices under the Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) continue to rise.
The move comes after a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on March 24, 2026, in Mumbai, where industry-related issues were reviewed. Acting on directions issued during the meeting, the cooperation and marketing department has issued a government resolution to formalise the committee.
The panel includes senior officials from finance, agriculture, energy, cooperation and industries departments, along with representatives from the state cooperative banking sector and the sugar administration.
It has been tasked with assessing the problems faced by sugar mills, reviewing industry demands placed by the Maharashtra State Sugar Association, and suggesting measures to support the sector, including preparations for the 2026–27 crushing season.
The committee will study the nature of the challenges, explore possible solutions and submit its report to the state government. The government has indicated it may also take up the matter with the Centre as part of broader efforts to support the industry.
