Maize farmers sleep at PACS office in Nagarkurnool amid gunny bag shortage, procurement delays
Maize farmers in Telangana’s Nagarkurnool face distress as delays in gunny bag supply stall procurement. Many slept at PACS offices to secure tokens, alleging mismanagement and black-marketing by middlemen, which is increasing costs and delaying crop sales.
Nagarkurnool: Maize farmers in the district continue to face hardships in selling their stocks due to lethargy of officials in failing to arrange gunny bags and expedite procurement.
Farmers at the Primary Agricultural Cooperative Society (PACS) in Tadoor in the district literally slept at the society office due to officials’ failure in providing gunny bags. Videos and images of farmers sleeping at the office are being shared on social media platforms.
Generally, farmers arrive at the PACS office and register their names for gunny bags. Depending on the stocks they get to the office, officials provide them gunny bags.
However, on Sunday many farmers arrived at the PACS office along with their stocks. To register their names, secure tokens and gunny bags, farmers placed their documents in the serpentine queues and slept at the office, according to reports.
Farmers from different villages carried their stocks to the PACS office in auto trolleys and tractors. And, if they fail to get tokens and gunny bags, they would have to return back and this would result in additional transport cost to them.
To avoid this, farmers slept at the office premises. On Monday morning also, farmers turned up at the office but had to wait for a long time to get gunny bags. Farmers charged that middlemen were selling the gunny bags in the market and demanded stern action against the officials to provide gunny bags, reports said.
