Namibia : Mahangu and maize farmers to benefit from seed subsidies
The Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB) is offering subsidies to over 1,400 farmers growing mahangu and white maize during the 2025/2026 season. This initiative, part of the National Drought Support Programme, helps farmers recover from the 2023/2024 drought. The subsidies cover certified seeds and fertilizers, benefiting both commercial and communal farmers to boost production and ensure food security.
The Namibian Agronomic Board (NAB) is subsidising farmers who grow mahangu and white maize seeds during the 2025/2026 growing season.
“More than 1400 mahangu and white maize grain producers are expected to benefit,” said NAB public relations officer Liseli Mwilima.
The subsidies fall under the NAB’s “National Drought Support Programme for Surplus and Commercial Producers,” to assist farmers in recovering from the 2023/2024 drought.
The programme provides subsidies through a refund claim system on pearl millet and white maize seeds as well as fertilisers for rain-fed production.
Mwilima explained why the “National Drought Support Programme for Surplus and Commercial Producers” was put in place.
“The programme provides subsidies for certified mahangu and white maize seeds to help farmers boost production yields and contribute to food security in the country. The programme also includes an initiative to provide 100% subsidies for mahangu seed production in the country so that farmers have access to certified seeds, which is currently a challenge for many mahangu farmers,” she said.
The programme aims to leave no farmers behind.
“The programme targets all farmers planting white maize and mahangu countrywide. The subsidies target both commercial and communal farmers,” said Mwilima.
