Purandeswari seeks price deficiency payment for maize farmers in Andhra Pradesh
Andhra Pradesh MP Daggubati Purandeswari urged Shivraj Singh Chouhan to implement Price Deficiency Payment under MIS for maize during rabi. With output expected above 37 LMT and arrivals peaking till June, the move aims to support prices and protect farmers from potential declines.
Rajamahendravaram MP Daggubati Purandeswari on Tuesday appealed to Union Minister for Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Shivraj Singh Chouhan to implement the Price Deficiency Payment (PDP) under the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) for maize crop as a special case in the rabi season in Andhra Pradesh.
In a letter to Mr. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, Ms. Purandeswari stated that peak arrivals of maize are expected till June, which could lead to a fall in market prices in the State.
Maize production is expected to exceed 37 lakh metric tonnes, with the crop cultivated over 4.83 lakh hectares in Andhra Pradesh during the rabi season. The Minimum Support Price (MSP) for maize is ₹2,400 per quintal.
“The implementation of the Market Intervention Scheme (MIS) through the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Limited will provide major relief to maize farmers if the crop is treated as a special case in Andhra Pradesh,” Ms. Purandeswari said.
