Pakistan : Govt Considers Major Wheat Relief Through Import Tax Removal
Pakistan is considering exempting wheat imports from the Provincial Infrastructure Development Cess and distributing 1 million tonnes of PASSCO wheat to provinces. Remaining requirements would be met through imports, overseen by an ECC steering committee amid declining strategic reserves.
According to sources, the government is considering exempting wheat imports from the Provincial Infrastructure Development Cess. It has also proposed distributing all 1 million tons of wheat available in PASSCO’s reserves among the provinces.
After using PASSCO’s wheat stocks, provinces will meet their remaining requirements through imports. The estimated cost of PASSCO’s wheat stands at Rs. 141 billion, while the wheat import bill is expected to reach around $340 million.
The provinces have highlighted a significant reduction in their strategic wheat reserves. Meanwhile, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has formed a steering committee under the leadership of the Deputy Prime Minister to oversee wheat imports.
