Pakistan: Growers demand sugar cane price be fixed at Rs650 per maund
Sindh Abadgar Ittehad (SAI) has demanded a sugarcane price of Rs650 per maund and timely commencement of crushing to prevent growers’ losses. The association also sought a wheat support price of Rs5,000 per maund and announced a November 4 protest over agricultural pricing concerns.
HYDERABAD: The Sindh Abadgar Ittehad (SAI) has demanded that the Sindh government fix the price of sugarcane at Rs650 per maund.
Addressing a press conference at the Hyderabad Press Club recently after a meeting of the growers’ body, SAI President Nawab Zubair Talpur said delays in announcing sugar cane prices and starting crushing operations every year caused financial losses to growers.
He said delayed crushing caused the sugar cane harvest to dry out in the cold weather, reducing its weight and returns to growers. Timely commencement of crushing would help preserve the weight of the crop and protect growers from financial losses, he added.
The meeting discussed the federal government’s wheat policy and prices. Talpur rejected reports that the government was considering fixing the wheat price at Rs4,500 per maund and demanded that it be set at Rs5,000 per maund.
He also expressed concern over the price of paddy in upper Sindh and said growers were facing difficulties as paddy was being sold at Rs2,600 per maund. The SAI announced that it would stage a protest on November 4 marching from the Karachi Press Club to the Chief Minister’s House to press for its demands.
