Pakistan : Port Qasim to Get Edible Oil Zone Under New Investment Plan
Pakistan’s government has invited vanaspati manufacturers to establish an edible oil industrial city at Port Qasim, offering facilitation and infrastructure support. The government also plans automotive and apparel zones, while exploring a PVMA partnership for seawater treatment to address industrial water shortages.

Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry extended the invitation while addressing members of the Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturing Association (PVMA) after inaugurating its new house, according to an official press release.
The minister said the edible oil industry makes a significant contribution to government revenue. The sector generates substantial customs duties and sales tax through imports.
Meanwhile, the government plans to develop industrial and commercial zones at Port Qasim. It aims to attract investment and boost manufacturing and exports through these projects.
Chaudhry said the government would establish an automotive processing zone on 150 acres at Port Qasim. The authorities will expand its capacity in phases based on market demand.
The government also plans to develop a 250-acre apparel zone. Its first phase could create more than 138,000 jobs and generate around $2.2 billion in annual exports.
The minister also addressed land-related issues at Port Qasim. He said the government had taken up these matters and would resolve them gradually. It will allot land to investors who present viable business plans.
He also discussed the port’s water shortage. According to him, the authorities could establish a seawater treatment plant through a business partnership with PVMA. The treated water could then support port operations.
Chaudhry invited PVMA to work with Port Qasim on the project. He said the partnership could establish and operate a system that meets the water needs of industries.
The minister said the government wanted greater private-sector participation in developing facilities and expanding industrial activity at Port Qasim.
