Pakistan : Punjab decides to buy 1 million tons of wheat

Maryam Nawaz Sharif approved purchasing 1 million metric tons of wheat from Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation. Wheat will be supplied to mills at Rs 3,300 per maund to stabilize flour prices, while Punjab will meet local needs before supplying Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

LAHORE: The Chief Minister of Punjab has approved the purchase of one million metric tons of wheat from Pasco. A special video link meeting was held under the chairmanship of Chief Minister of Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif in which the current situation of wheat and flour in the province was reviewed in detail.

During the meeting, a complete report was presented by the relevant authorities regarding wheat reserves and prices. Taking an important decision in the meeting, approval was given to purchase one million metric tons of wheat from Pasco.

According to officials, wheat will be supplied to flour mills at Rs 3,300 per maund to provide cheap flour and bread to the public so that prices in the market can be controlled.

The meeting also considered concerns regarding the supply of wheat from Punjab to other provinces, especially Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

It was informed in the briefing that the evidence of stopping the supply of wheat from Sindh to any province via Punjab is not based on reality, and no complaint has been reported about stopping the supply of wheat from Sindh to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It was further informed that the process of declaring the wheat stock in Punjab is underway and the complete data is in the process of preparation.

The officials also informed that the grain of the current crop is relatively small, due to which a complete record of the stock is being compiled keeping in mind the nutritional needs of the province. It was decided in the meeting that after fulfilling its nutritional needs, Punjab will definitely fulfill the duty of supplying wheat to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
