Pakistan sugar industry seeks government nod to export 1 million tonnes amid surplus
Pakistan’s agricultural experts have urged the government to allow exports of one million tonnes of sugar to reduce surplus stocks of around 1.52 million tonnes. They warn excess inventories could delay 2026-27 crushing, affecting farmer payments and mill finances.
Islamabad: Pakistan’s agricultural experts have called on the government to permit the export of one million tonnes of sugar, warning that the country’s large surplus could create problems for farmers and sugar mills ahead of the 2026-27 crushing season, reported Business Recorder.
The demand was raised at a seminar held at the National Press Club on Saturday, where experts discussed concerns surrounding the upcoming sugarcane crushing season.
Agricultural expert Khan Faraz cited data from the Pakistan Sugar Mills Association (PSMA), saying the industry was facing a significant sugar surplus. According to him, sugar mills have indicated that the start of the new crushing season could be delayed unless excess stocks from the previous season are cleared.
Faraz said millers want to sell the surplus sugar before beginning crushing of the 2026-27 sugarcane crop. Delaying the start of crushing, he said, could affect the mills’ ability to make payments to farmers on time and result in financial losses for the industry.
PSMA President said Pakistan currently has surplus sugar stocks of around 1.52 million tonnes, while the country’s sugarcane crop has performed well this year.
Faraz said the industry has therefore urged the federal government to approve exports of one million tonnes. According to him, the move would help reduce surplus stocks, support farmers and sugar mills, and generate valuable foreign exchange for Pakistan.
He added that clearing excess inventories through exports would also help mills settle outstanding payments to farmers and ensure that the 2026-27 crushing season begins on schedule.
