Pakistan’s wheat imports 100% reduced in FY 2024-25
Pakistan’s wheat imports dropped by 100% during the first four months of the current financial year (July-October 2023-24) compared to the same period last year, as no wheat was imported this year. In contrast, pulses imports decreased by 7.27%, while fertilizer imports surged by 121.36%. Imports of medicinal products rose by 18.59%, agricultural machinery saw a 70.92% increase, and insecticide imports fell by 31.49%.
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s wheat imports recorded 100 per cent reduction during first four months of the current financial year as compared to the imports of the corresponding period of the last year, according to the data of the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics.
During the period from July-October 2023-24, Pakistan spent $166.633 million on the import of over 556,903 metric tons of wheat to fulfill the local requirements, which was recorded at zero during the same period of current financial year.
Meanwhile, pulses imports also went down by 7.27 per cent as 430,177 metric tons of pulses valued at $287.837 million as against the imports of 516,666 metric tons costing $321.140 million of the same period of last year, it added.
However, fertilizer imports into the country have seen a significant increase of 121.36% in the first four months of the current financial year (July-October 2024) compared to the imports of the corresponding period of the last year.
During this period, Pakistan imported over 612,622 metric tons of fertilizers valued at $374.876 million, a sharp rise from 334,675 metric tons worth $169.262 million in the corresponding months of 2023, it added.
In addition to fertilizers, medicinal product imports into the country also witnessed an increase of 18.59%, with 12,441 metric tons valued at $406.452 million imported, compared to 25,312 metric tons worth $342.730 million during the same period in the previous year, it added.
On the other hand, insecticide imports dropped by 31.49%, with imports recorded at 8,717 metric tons valued at $44.831 million, down from 13,226 metric tons worth $65.441 million in the same period of 2023, the data revealed.
Moreover, agricultural machinery imports also experienced a sharp rise of 70.92%, with $39.616 million worth of machinery imported, compared to $23.178 million during the same period last year.
