PM Modi to launch revival of two Bihar sugar mills on Nov. 20
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the revival of Bihar’s Sakri and Raiyam sugar mills on 20 November. Under the ‘Saat Nischay-3’ programme, the state also plans 25 new sugar mills to boost sugarcane processing, farmer incomes, employment and industrial growth.
Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lay the foundation stone for the revival of the Sakri and Raiyam sugar mills on November 20, kickstarting Bihar’s drive to revive its sugar industry and expand processing capacity across the state.
The foundation stone ceremony marks the beginning of the redevelopment of the two long-shut mills, which the state government expects to resume production within one to two years, Jagran reported.
The announcement comes as Bihar steps up efforts to establish 25 new sugar mills under Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s ‘Saat Nischay-3′ programme aimed at strengthening the state’s industrial base and improving returns for sugarcane farmers.
Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday, Cane Industry Minister Sanjay Kumar said the government was committed to reviving closed sugar mills while promoting fresh investments in the sector.
“The revival of sugar mills and establishment of new units will provide better marketing opportunities for sugarcane growers, increase farmers’ incomes and create large-scale employment,” he said.
Cane Industry Department Secretary Dharmendra Singh said the government has set a target of commencing production at the Sakri and Raiyam mills within one to two years of the foundation stone laying.
To ensure adequate raw material supplies, the state is also encouraging farmers to expand sugarcane cultivation alongside the development of new milling capacity, he said.
Singh said the plan to establish 25 new sugar mills and revive several defunct units forms part of the state’s broader ‘Samriddh Udyog, Sashakt Bihar’ initiative under the ‘Saat Nischay-3’ programme.
The state government expects the expansion of the sugar industry to boost rural employment, strengthen the state’s industrial sector and revive Bihar’s position as a major sugar-producing state.
