KUNAK: Subsidised 1kg packaged cooking oil produced locally under the Sayang brand has not been available in the Kunak and Semporna markets for over a month.Daily Express reliably learnt that the producer, Syarikat Sawit Kinabalu (Kunak Edible Oil Sdn Bhd), here, had been instructed to “stop” production of the cooking oil, effective early January. It was understood that the “instruction” was issued by the Domestic Trade and Costs of Living Ministry (KPDN) and no reason was given.Due to this, consumers in the two districts on the East Coast can no longer obtain Sayang brand subsidised cooking oil in the market.

“For some time now I’ve been wondering why Sayang subsidised cooking oil is not available in supermarkets and retail stores here,” complained a consumer.Consumers are forced to switch to other brands of cooking oil.The Sayang cooking oil is an initiative of the State Government to ensure sufficient supply of subsidised cooking oil, especially to meet the needs of consumers in the rural areas, including the B40 group.A Daily Express survey found that only bottled cooking oil is mostly sold in supermarkets and groceries here.
